For this purpose, a laboratory-scale membrane bioreactors (MBR) unit was operated at steady state, with three different sludge ages in extremely low range of 0.5-2.0d, and a hydraulic retention time of 8.0h. Substrate feeding was adjusted to 220-250mg COD/L and involved a synthetic mixture representing the readily biodegradable COD fraction in domestic sewage. The MBR operation at sludge age of 1.0d was duplicated with acetate feeding as the sole organic carbon source. Under different operating conditions, SSMBR was able to secure complete removal of available soluble/readily biodegradable substrate, with a residual microbial product level as low as 20-30mg COD/L, partly retained and accumulated in reactor volume. Phylogenic analysis based on polymerase chain reactions-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis indicated that selected sludge ages affected the composition of microbial community. Lower sludge ages selected a community characterized by faster rates for microbial growth. Results confirmed the existence of a functional relationship between variable process kinetics and changes in the microbial community structure, even for slight variations that can be inflicted on the culture history while operating superfast MBR systems.</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">opendefinition.org</subfield> <subfield code="a">cc-by</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Dept Environm Engn, Fac Civil Engn, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Pala-Ozkok, Ilke</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Dept Environm Engn, Fac Civil Engn, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Aysel, Merve</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Dept Environm Engn, Fac Civil Engn, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Teksoy-Basaran, Senem</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Fac Sci & Letters, Dept Mol Biol & Genet, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Akarsubasi, Alper</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Fac Sci & Letters, Dept Mol Biol & Genet, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ergal, Ipek</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Fac Sci & Letters, Dept Mol Biol & Genet, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Kurt, Halil</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Dept Environm Engn, Fac Civil Engn, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ubay-Cokgor, Emine</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">Orhon, Derin</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">article</subfield> <subfield code="a">publication</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="542" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="l">open</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Tech Univ, Dept Environm Engn, Fac Civil Engn, TR-34469 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Sozen, Seval</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="260" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">2015-01-01</subfield> </datafield> <controlfield tag="005">20210316053932.0</controlfield> <datafield tag="909" ind1="C" ind2="O"> <subfield code="o">oai:zenodo.org:80839</subfield> <subfield code="p">user-tubitak-destekli-proje-yayinlari</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="z">md5:cafbd345649f54814a3c9e18ea6829b1</subfield> <subfield code="s">278</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.trrecord/80839/files/bib-90900599-d288-41a3-8d99-f8a3617517ca.txt</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">http://www.opendefinition.org/licenses/cc-by</subfield> <subfield code="a">Creative Commons Attribution</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="024" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">10.1080/19443994.2014.941016</subfield> <subfield code="2">doi</subfield> </datafield> </record>
