It is used in various fields such as culinary, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, therapeutic, and industrial applications. Thus, a Box-Wilson experimental plan was used in this study to select the optimal operating conditions in order to obtain high volumes of essential oils. The factorial design method was applied to evaluate at an industrial scale the effect of major process variables on the essential oil extraction from Myrtus communis L. herbs by the steam distillation method. The input variables considered as significant operating conditions were: X-1-boiler occupancy rate (boilers were filled to 50%, 75%, and 100%), X-2-distillation duration (distillation was continued 60, 75, and 90 min), and X-3-particle size (herbs were cut in sizes of 10, 20, and 30 mm via guillotine). The dependent variable selected, coded as Y, was the essential oil volume obtained (mL). The steps of the classical statistical experimental design technique were complemented with the Taguchi method to improve the extraction efficacy of essential oil from Myrtus communis L., and the optimum parameter conditions were selected: boiler occupancy rate 100%, distillation duration 75 min, and particle size 20 mm. Following the optimum parameters, the GC-MS assay revealed for the Myrtus communis L. essential oil two predominant components, alpha -pinene-33.14% and eucalyptol-55.09%.</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">opendefinition.org</subfield> <subfield code="a">cc-by</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Med & Pharm Carol Davila, Fac Pharm, Dept Phys & Colloidal Chem, Bucharest 20956, Romania</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ghica, Mihaela Violeta</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Politehn Bucuresti, Fac Appl Chem & Mat Sci, Bucharest 011061, Romania</subfield> <subfield code="a">Danila, Elena</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Mustafa Kemal Univ, Fac Agr, Dept Field Crops, TR-31034 Antakya, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ozturk, Sevket</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Mustafa Kemal Univ, Fac Agr, Dept Field Crops, TR-31034 Antakya, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Tuerkmen, Musa</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Natl Res & Dev Inst Text & Leather, Div Leather & Footwear, Res Inst, Dept Collagen, Bucharest 031215, Romania</subfield> <subfield code="a">Albu Kaya, Madalina Georgiana</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Med & Pharm Carol Davila, Fac Pharm, Dept Phys & Colloidal Chem, Bucharest 20956, Romania</subfield> <subfield code="a">Dinu-Pirvu, Cristina-Elena</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">article</subfield> <subfield code="a">publication</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="542" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="l">open</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Mustafa Kemal Univ, Fac Agr, Dept Field Crops, TR-31034 Antakya, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Kaya, Durmus Alpaslan</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="260" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">2020-01-01</subfield> </datafield> <controlfield tag="005">20210315064036.0</controlfield> <datafield tag="909" ind1="C" ind2="O"> <subfield code="o">oai:zenodo.org:7565</subfield> <subfield code="p">user-tubitak-destekli-proje-yayinlari</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="z">md5:446add26d69300bd45c27344c7d2c3bf</subfield> <subfield code="s">243</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.trrecord/7565/files/bib-a35b6c14-b78d-4746-8bf5-8907df11d380.txt</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">http://www.opendefinition.org/licenses/cc-by</subfield> <subfield code="a">Creative Commons Attribution</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="024" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">10.3390/molecules25102399</subfield> <subfield code="2">doi</subfield> </datafield> </record>
