Determining the precise timing at which this ocean closed is particularly important to test kinematic reconstructions and geodynamic models of the Mediterranean region, and the chronology of suturing and its mechanisms remain controversial. Here, we document the Cretaceous-Eocene sedimentary history of the Central Sakarya Basin, along the northern margin of the Neotethys Ocean, via various approaches including biostratigraphy, geochronology, and sedimentology. Two high-resolution sections from the Central Sakarya Basin show that pelagic carbonate sedimentation shifted to rapid siliciclastic deposition in the early Campanian (similar to 79.6 Ma), interpreted to be a result of the build-up of the accretionary prism at the southern margin of the Sakarya Terrane. Rapid onset of deltaic progradation and an increase in accumulation rates in the late Danian (similar to 61 Ma), as well as a local angular unconformity are attributed to the onset of collision between the Sakarya Terrane and the Tauride-Anatolide Platform. Thus, our results indicate that though deformation of the subduction margin in Western Anatolia started as early as the Campanian, the closure of the Izmir-Ankara Ocean was only achieved by the early Palaeocene.</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">opendefinition.org</subfield> <subfield code="a">cc-by</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Gen Directorate Mineral Res & Explorat MTA, Dept Geol Res, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Hakyemez, Aynur</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Newcastle Univ, Dept Civil Engn & Geosci, Newcastle, England</subfield> <subfield code="a">Acikalin, Sanem</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Middle East Tech Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Altiner, Sevinc Ozkan</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Bulent Ecevit Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Zonguldak, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Buyukmeric, Yesim</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Washington, Dept Earth & Space Sci, Seattle, WA 98195 USA</subfield> <subfield code="a">Licht, Alexis</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Gen Directorate Mineral Res & Explorat MTA, Dept Geol Res, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Demircan, Huriye</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Cukurova Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Adana, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Safak, Umit</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Aksaray Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Aksaray, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Yildiz, Ayseguel</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Middle East Tech Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Yilmaz, Ismail Omer</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Vienna, Dept Geodynam & Sedimentol, Vienna, Australia</subfield> <subfield code="a">Wagreich, Michael</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Kansas, Dept Geol, Lawrence, KS 66045 USA</subfield> <subfield code="a">Campbell, Clay</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">article</subfield> <subfield code="a">publication</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="542" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="l">open</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Eskisehir Osmangazi Univ, Dept Geol Engn, Eskisehir, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ocakoglu, Faruk</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="260" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">2019-01-01</subfield> </datafield> <controlfield tag="005">20210316031737.0</controlfield> <datafield tag="909" ind1="C" ind2="O"> <subfield code="o">oai:zenodo.org:70587</subfield> <subfield code="p">user-tubitak-destekli-proje-yayinlari</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="z">md5:659c92a58fea94ff8b721a6e4815a3ef</subfield> <subfield code="s">345</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.trrecord/70587/files/bib-7c0ed23d-b2ea-4da6-be3b-5450e099f38b.txt</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">http://www.opendefinition.org/licenses/cc-by</subfield> <subfield code="a">Creative Commons Attribution</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="024" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">10.1080/00206814.2018.1507009</subfield> <subfield code="2">doi</subfield> </datafield> </record>
