Heavy metals are one of the most common pollutants in the seas and marine organisms, including demersal and pelagic fish, can accumulate them from the environment. Assessment of the ecological risk of heavy metals from fish has an important role in public health. In this study, some heavy metal (Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Hg, Cu, Zn, and Fe) concentrations were determined in the muscle tissues of two commonly consumed fish species,Trachurus mediterraneus(Mediterranean horse mackerel) andMerlangius merlangus(Whiting), which are the fifth (14,222 tons/year) and sixth (6814 tons/year) highest commercial catches of marine fish species in Turkey, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations of samples collected from four sites (Adalar, Izmit Bay, Yalova, and Tekirdag) in the Marmara Sea were determined using ICP-MS. Fish samples caught at Yalova station were found to have the highest heavy metal concentrations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in terms of the mean values, only As, and Cr were higher than permissible limits inT. mediterraneus, while Pb, Cd, As, and Cr were higher inM. merlangus. Arsenic concentrations were higher than maximum limits in bothT. mediterraneusandM. merlangus. The estimated weekly intake (EWI) was calculated to assess the potential health impact. The EWI for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury for some sites was above the provisional tolerable weekly intake.</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">opendefinition.org</subfield> <subfield code="a">cc-by</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Univ, Fac Aquat Sci, Dept Marine & Freshwater Resources Management, TR-34130 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Aydin, Fatih</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Univ, Fac Aquat Sci, Dept Marine & Freshwater Resources Management, TR-34130 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Gaygusuz, Ozcan</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Univ, Fac Aquat Sci, Dept Marine & Freshwater Resources Management, TR-34130 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Akcaalan, Reyhan</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Univ Hlth Sci, Fac Gulhane Med, Dept Publ Hlth, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Camur, Derya</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Minist Hlth, Prov Hlth Directorate, Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ilter, Huseyin</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Bulent Ecevit Univ, Dept Publ Hlth, Fac Med, Zonguldak, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Ayoglu, Ferruh Niyazi</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Bulent Ecevit Univ, Dept Environm Engn, TR-67100 Zonguldak, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Altin, Ahmet</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Karadeniz Tech Univ, Dept Publ Hlth, Fac Med, Trabzon, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Topbas, Murat</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Univ, Fac Aquat Sci, Dept Marine & Freshwater Resources Management, TR-34130 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Albay, Meric</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">article</subfield> <subfield code="a">publication</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="542" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="l">open</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">Istanbul Univ, Fac Aquat Sci, Dept Marine & Freshwater Resources Management, TR-34130 Istanbul, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="a">Koker, Latife</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="260" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">2021-01-01</subfield> </datafield> <controlfield tag="005">20210315055255.0</controlfield> <datafield tag="909" ind1="C" ind2="O"> <subfield code="o">oai:zenodo.org:3975</subfield> <subfield code="p">user-tubitak-destekli-proje-yayinlari</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="z">md5:7de82af6383c2e9a08d263050eff9c69</subfield> <subfield code="s">305</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.trrecord/3975/files/bib-2a41ddda-2846-44fd-9bf7-5523cb727663.txt</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">http://www.opendefinition.org/licenses/cc-by</subfield> <subfield code="a">Creative Commons Attribution</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="024" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">10.1007/s00267-020-01352-y</subfield> <subfield code="2">doi</subfield> </datafield> </record>
