Integrating sustainability in the production process of these foods, known for their positive effects on human health, is critical. A mixed-method approach was employed, utilizing quantitative analysis of industry data and qualitative evaluation through an extensive literature review. The study encompassed various stages, including raw material sourcing, production, processing, packaging, transportation, and consumer behavior. Findings indicate that functional food production may require higher energy and water resources, but advantages were observed in waste management and transportation stages. The study reveals a multifaceted relationship between functional food production and environmental sustainability. Innovative technologies and environmentally friendly methods present potential solutions to mitigate adverse effects. Collaboration within the industry and with regulators, researchers, and consumers is imperative for a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. This research underscores the importance of considering the environmental impacts in the burgeoning field of functional foods, highlighting their increasing significance in human nutrition and health. It calls for targeted strategies, guided by the complexity and variability observed, emphasizing the need for future research, effective policy formulation, and industry-wide sustainable practices. The proliferation of functional health foods is necessary, and continued research is required to facilitate their widespread adoption. The findings provide a basis for further exploration and a pathway towards an environmentally responsible approach in the production of functional foods.</p></subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"> <subfield code="2">opendefinition.org</subfield> <subfield code="a">cc-by</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="700" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0001-5293-871X</subfield> <subfield code="u">Gaziantep Üniversitesi</subfield> <subfield code="a">Zariç, Özgür Eren</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="980" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">conferencepaper</subfield> <subfield code="a">publication</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="542" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="l">open</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="0">(orcid)0000-0002-2448-4957</subfield> <subfield code="u">Gaziantep Üniversitesi</subfield> <subfield code="a">Çelekli, Abuzer</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">Environmental impact</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">Functional foods</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">Sustainable production</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="711" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">Ankara, Turkey</subfield> <subfield code="g">EurasianBioChem 2023</subfield> <subfield code="d">11-13 October 2023</subfield> <subfield code="a">6th International Eurasian Conference on Biological and Chemical Sciences</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="260" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="c">2023-10-18</subfield> </datafield> <controlfield tag="005">20231030080646.0</controlfield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="y">Conference website</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://www.eurasianbiochem.org</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="773" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="n">doi</subfield> <subfield code="a">10.5281/zenodo.10021465</subfield> <subfield code="i">isIdenticalTo</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="909" ind1="C" ind2="O"> <subfield code="o">oai:aperta.ulakbim.gov.tr:263250</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2=" "> <subfield code="z">md5:85c12dec9d5e14594cb3a08d6e0d2f8f</subfield> <subfield code="s">2052330</subfield> <subfield code="u">https://aperta.ulakbim.gov.trrecord/263250/files/Assessing the environmental impact of functional foods (2).pdf</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="540" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="u">https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/</subfield> <subfield code="a">Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="024" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">10.5281/zenodo.10021465</subfield> <subfield code="2">doi</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="041" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">eng</subfield> </datafield> </record>
