    <subfield code="a">&lt;p&gt;Mobile subsurface colloids have received considerable attention because the migration of colloids and colloid-contaminant complexes through the soil matrix substantially increases the risk of groundwater pollution. Typically defined as suspended particulate matter with diameters less than 10&amp;mu;m, colloids include both organic and inorganic materials such as microorganisms, humic substances, clay minerals and metal oxides.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Previous studies have focused primarily on the interpretation of colloid breakthrough (i.e. column elution) in model experimental systems. These systems use latex microspheres, clays, oxides or microorganisms as the colloids, and sand or glass beads as model porous media; they may or may not include other tracers. Most studies have been carried out in saturated conditions. Fewer have examined unsaturated flow with the result that transport and retention of colloids under differing unsaturated moisture contents is not well understood. Modeling and simulation tools can help in understanding the mechanisms governing colloid transport.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this chapter we will review the approaches to modeling and simulation of colloid transport under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. We will finish the chapter with the simulations done with COMSOL-MP which is a finite element based computer simulation program.&lt;/p&gt;</subfield>
