Metal-free and metal phthalocyanines (M = Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Pb or Sn(IV)Cl2) substituted with four benzo-15-crown-5 units through sulfanyl bridges have been synthesized from a new phthalonitrile derivative, viz. 1-{[(benzo-15-crown-5)]-4'-yl]thia}-3,4-dicyanobenzene; dagger the soluble products have been evaluated for electrical conductivity, alkali metal extraction and complexation with Pd(II) through sulfanyl bridges.
