Description

The server and network-assisted DASH (SAND) concept aims to increase the performance of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) systems. As being one of the future Internet technologies, SDN provides advantages to support Internet applications thanks to its flexibility and design essentials allowing application-specific routing alternatives and providing network information. In this study, we propose an SDN-based architecture and a SAND-aware DASH client that improves viewer experience. The simulation results show that this architecture can help improve the performance of DASH clients as well as provide fair sharing of the network resources among the clients. The results also show that the proposed architecture can adapt to changing network and server conditions with the help of SDN.
