Disability-Denoting Alqāb in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl: An Inventory of Hadith Transmitters

This dataset lists the hadith transmitters who bear a laqab (byname) denoting a physical or sensory disability in al-Mizzī's (d. 742/1341) Tahdhīb al-Kamāl fī asmāʾ al-rijāl (ed. Bashshār ʿAwwād Maʿrūf, 35 vols., Beirut: Muʾassasat al-Risāla, 1980–1992). It contains 104 records: a functional core of 79 persons and 25 bearers of al-aʿwar and al-aḥwal below the threshold of functional loss, together with 15 alqāb or conditions searched for without a direct carrier being identified.

Inherited alqāb, metaphorical usages, nisbas derived from places and disambiguation entries are excluded. Each record gives the category of disability, the laqab, the transmitter's name, the entry number in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl, the date of death, the generation and the centre of activity. Files are provided in CSV, JSON and Excel formats.
