Compressibility behavior of colemanite added bentonite under short and long-term high temperature

Description

The present study focuses on the one-dimensional consolidation of bentonite mixtures under high temperatures. To further investigate the volume deformation behavior of bentonite mixtures under different thermal conditions, consolidation tests were performed on the samples exposed to both short-term and long-term high temperatures. To investigate the long-term temperature effects, the samples were placed in thermal pools for six months and one year before being tested in a temperature-controlled oedometer test system. Furthermore, the influence of colemanite on the high-temperature consolidation behavior of bentonite was examined. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights for addressing geotechnical engineering problems concerning consolidation under high temperatures. Notably, changes in temperature and exposure time impact the final settlement of the soil. Findings revealed that high temperatures led to increased compressive strain in bentonite while decreasing its unloading deformation. However, high-temperature exposure had a positive effect on the compressive strain of bentonite. Moreover, the addition of colemanite positively impacted the consolidation characteristics of bentonite under various thermal scenarios. The results have shown that the 10 % and 20 % colemanite showed different effects on the volumetric deformation of bentonite.
