Impact of Transformer Configuration on Cost, Efficiency, and Space Utilization: A Case Study

Transformers are fundamental components within electrical power distribution networks, playing a pivotal role in voltage regulation, power transmission, and power distribution. As infrastructure demands grow and the need for cost-effective, space-efficient, and energy-efficient solutions intensifies, the selection of the appropriate transformer configuration has become increasingly critical. This study presents a comprehensive comparative analysis between two commonly adopted configurations: a pair of 800 kVA distribution transformers versus a single 1600 kVA transformer. The objective is to evaluate and quantify the differences between these configurations with respect to physical footprint, capital and installation costs, and electrical efficiency, specifically focusing on no-load and load losses. The results show that one 1600 kVA transformer usually performs better because it needs less space, costs about 22.7% less to buy and 58.7% less for labor costs, and has lower no-load losses. However, it is also observed that the dual 800 kVA configuration provides potential advantages in terms of system redundancy and spatial flexibility, particularly in environments where a single installation location for a larger unit is not feasible.
