Description

Abstract (English)

This study examines the conceptions of the pre-Islamic Arabian society regarding metaphysical entities such as angels and jinn, and the role of these beliefs within the new framework of meaning established by the Qurʾān. This study argues that the dominant metaphysical imagination in contemporary Muslim societies is influenced to a significant extent by residual semi-animistic elements from the Jahiliyya period, rather than emerging directly from the conceptual framework established by the Qurʾān. In the study, the ways in which these entities have been transformed into areas of exploitation throughout the historical process are analyzed within sociological and psychological contexts. The study analyzes how deviations—such as the feminization of angels and the association of jinn with unseen knowledge (ghayb)—were subjected to a tawhid-centered correction by the Qurʾān. Furthermore, the reflections of these ancient notions on today’s popular culture and belief practices, manifested in the form of “Neo-Jahiliyya,” are evaluated within the framework of the epistemological authority of revelation through the example of Gabriel (a.s.). This study, which adopts a qualitative research method, comparatively examines classical exegesis (tafsir) literature and modern perceptions, emphasizing the importance of purifying the concept of tawhid, as constructed through revelation, from mythological elements. In the study, it has been determined that these conceptions belonging to the Jahiliyyah period have implicitly maintained their existence in today's belief practices by changing form. Thus, the study aims to enrich contemporary Islamic thought concerning this subject and its relevance to the modern individual.
