SuAda….Yücel Yazgin …Exhibition

I am so happy – and grateful to the Cultural Department – that it was decided to repeat the beautiful exhibition of the artist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yücel Yazgin closer to us art lovers. I had to miss the first exhibition in Nicosia in October.

On the opening evening at the Public Library (next to The House Restaurant and opposite the Colony Hotel) I met the artist and his many friends and colleagues. The Director of the Cultural Department and the artist greeted the guests and opened the exhibition. The Manager of the Library Rukiye Kaymak and her team were also present. In 2011 our Thursday Artists group had their exhibition here in these rooms, so I always feel at home here.

I have met Yücel Yazgin, born in 1960 in Pafos, several times during the last few years on the occasion of the monthly art exhibitions at the Near East University. I have always admired his unique linocut art. However, it was now a special pleasure to have the chance to see a series of his works he did for a project, the project SuAda = Waterland… The waters of the island, lakes, ponds, brooks, and he collected the images from above, bird view, the outlines… and for his project he personalized them, gave them a mystic life. And when you stand in front of the work you see the black forms of dragons, dogs, bears, and giant cats as shadows in streets and places, villages and cities, landscapes…. With his knife he makes the clouds wander over the sky, he lets the wind blow and the trees bend.

Each work is a composition, an homage to a certain important Cyprus place, blending the architectural characteristics with those of nature.  Stories told. You can see more works on Instagram.

It is an absolute Must to visit the exhibition, visiting hours are during office hours, i.e. 8 am to 15.15 pm...
