Description

Abstract
This article tries to reveal the differentiating features of theology faculties in the field
of religious education with its historical background. In the Ottoman Empire, there is an
effort to catch up with and integrate a western science that goes back to the late 1600s. But
since 1800, this effort; It manifested itself as an effort to transform institutions and to
harmonize institutions with their developing forms in the West. The continuation of the
madrasahs as they were did not seem reasonable to the Ottoman administration and
intellectuals.
In the period when the madrasahs were standing in their strongest form, western
science left the science in the Islamic world behind. Although there is a tradition around the
great scholars who grew up in the madrasahs, which are generally religious educationcentered, the institutionalism of the university system and the system of the madrasas are at
an incomparable level. The university aims to provide original contributions by having the
history and problematics of the chosen field. The primary duties of universities have been to
train scholars with these characteristics and to provide an environment for them to continue
their academic studies. Madrasahs, on the other hand, are institutions where existing
knowledge is fully acquired. However, it is a different quality to develop the existing and
contribute to the problem by dealing with it. This quality is not found in madrasahs. In this
state, mudarris can be moved to legitimate ground in the role of teachers as lecturers. But
being a faculty member requires a different competence.
