Description
Purpose: Additive manufacturing methods are widely used and are still being improved. This study proposes a new combined production method: decreasing production time and cost while increasing or maintaining the product's strength is the main concern. Furthermore, additive manufacturing methods are aimed to be used for compliant mechanisms more effectively using the proposed method. Theory and Methods: The gyroid infill pattern is used in this study. Since the gyroid infill pattern has a porous geometry, produced parts are filled with epoxy resin by the vacuum infusion method. Resin-filled and unfilled samples are subjected to tensile and three-point bending tests. Obtained results are compared through strength, manufacturing time and cost. Results: This study proved that the vacuum infusion method is suitable for 3D printed parts with gyroid infill. Resin -filled parts have greater tensile and bending resistance at every infill ratio. Furthermore, it is proven that the manufacturing cost and time can be reduced drastically. Conclusion: The manufacturing time, one of the most significant disadvantages of additive manufacturing, is reduced by employing the resin filling by the vacuum infusion method. This method may increase the effectiveness of additive manufacturing. Higher-strength parts with lower cost and manufacturing time can increase the usage of additive manufacturing methods in the industry. Furthermore, obtained results increase the easiness of the production of the compliant mechanisms.
