Subjective Poverty: An Assessment by Leyden Approach

Despite the existence of many studies making implications on poverty by considering subjective evaluations of the individuals, such studies are very rare in Turkey. With an aim to fill this gap, this study attempts to subjectively describe the concept of poverty. To this end, 408 households (816 individuals) have been questionnaired in the central districts of Mugla and Mardin. Based on the results of the survey, the subjective poverty lines and rates have been calculated by using statistical software package of Stata 9 based on Leyden approach. The calculations for both two districts were found higher than the values of Turkish Statistics Institution (TurkStat), but lower than a number of unions' calculations in Turkey.
