Cinclidotus vardaranus Erdag & Kurschner (Bryopsida, Pottiaceae) sp nov from Eastern Turkey, with some remarks on the speciation centre of the genus

   Erdag, Adrian; Kuerschner, Harald

Cinclidotus vardaranus is described and illustrated as a new species from Eastern Turkey (Erzincan province). The species is easily distinguishable from all other European, Mediterranean and Southwest Asian Cinclidotus species by its unique combination of ovate to elliptic, obtuse to weakly acute, clasping to subamplexicaul leaves, an undulate lower leaf margin, the partly bistratose leaf lamina, and the papillose laminal cells. The new species was collected in the Ikisu stream of the Kemaliye area, where it grows submerged and on rocks exposed to submergence, as well as to summer drought. The new taxon rises the Turkish number of the Cinclidotus/Dialytrichia complex up to seven, indicating a major centre of diversity and speciation in the Mediterranean-Southwest Asian territory.
