Fishing in Kars-Ardahan Lake Çıldır: Ecological Interactions and Conservation Strategies

Lake Çıldır, situated in the Kars and Ardahan regions, is a vital ecosystem. Trout fishing is a prominent ecosystem component, highlighting the need to preserve the natural habitat and promote sustainable fishing practices. This review aims to assess the existing literature to elucidate ecological interactions and conservation strategies in Çıldır Lake. This study reviewed research conducted in and around Lake Çıldır over the past decade. Databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed were consulted, using keywords like "Lake Çıldır" "Trout," "Ecosystem," and related terms. Current research reveals that trout populations in Çıldır Lake face various threats. Climate change, overfishing, habitat loss, and the introducing invasive species, such as Carassius gibelio (Israeli carp), have been identified as significant factors contributing to population decline. Furthermore, diverse, sustainable fishing strategies have been proposed, including fisheries management, legal regulations, and community education. Various methods and strategies for achieving sustainable fishing in the ecosystem have also been suggested. Recommended approaches include ecosystem-based management and integrating scientific research into fishing policies. Ensuring sustainable trout fishing in Lake Çıldır necessitates ecosystem conservation and maximizing economic benefits. It emphasizes the importance of developing a sustainable management strategy grounded in scientific research. Additionally, reviewing and updating regional and national policies and legal regulations are crucial for sustainable fishing. Future research should focus on enhancing and implementing sustainable fishing practices while considering changing climate conditions and the needs of local communities.
