Frequency doubling in z-cut GaSe crystals was studied at a fundamental wavelength of 1579 nm using the Maker fringe technique. The signals show a pronounced fine structure due to Fabry-Perot resonances of the fundamental wave in the plane-parallel crystals of high refractive indices. In the data evaluation, the birefringence of the samples must be taken into account. The fine structure is described using a ray-tracer algorithm which accounts for the finite diameter of the incident beam. For the nonlinear coefficient a value of d(22) greater than or equal to 72 +/- 6 pm/V is obtained. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Cu2+-mediated complex formation between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied in neutral water in the presence of Cu2+. Depending on the concentration of Cu2+, the reaction between PAA-Cu2+ complexes and BSA appeared to follow one of two possible paths. At low Cu2+ concentrations (n(Cu)/n(AA) < 0.15), a further increase in BSA concentration led to the breakdown of the complex as in mechanism I:

This article presents an analytical model for analyzing transient hear transfer between a brick particle and air flow during heating in a fluidized bed combustor Both experimental and theoretical studies were carried out. The experimental investigation provided the temperature distributions at the centers of the spherical particles during heating. These data were presented in the dimensionless form and were compared with the results of the present analytical model The modeling includes two heat transfer coefficient cases. In the first case, heat transfer coefficient is the only connection heat transfer coefficient, and in the second case, it is the sum of the convection and radiation heat transfer coefficients. In the comparison between experimental data and theoretical results, better agreement was found for the second case. The present results indicate that the radiation heat transfer coefficient has a significant effect on transient heat transfer from the single object and should be taken into consideration.

In this work, we studied the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves in a prestressed thin elastic tube filled with an incompressible viscous fluid. In order to include the geometrical and structural dispersion into analysis, the wall's inertial and sheer deformation are taken into account in determining the inner pressure-inner cross sectional area relation. Using the reductive perturbation technique, the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves, in the long-wave approximation, is shown to be governed by the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation. Due to dependence of coefficients of the governing equation on the initial deformation, the material and viscosity parameters, the profile of the travelling wave solution to the KdVB equation changes with these parameters. These variations are calculated numerically for some elastic materials and the effects of initial deformation and the viscosity parameter on the propagation characteristics are discussed. The effect of impurities or additives on the microstructure of some commericial alumina ceramic samples have been characterized by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer and the mechanical properties investigated. Both the hardness and the toughness have been found to increase as the SiO2 content decreases, and the theoretical density is reached in these materials. Grain size and distribution seem to be important factors in the mechanical properties of alumina ceramics. If the additives are controlled carefully, finer grain size and distribution can be obtained, together with a high relative density in terms of pore distribution characteristics and consequently enhanced mechanical properties.

The present study deals with an analysis of unsteady heat-transfer during forced-air cooling of figs as spherical fruits. The heat-transfer mechanism in the cooling of fruits is quite complex. Conduction, convection, radiation, and internal heat generation take place. Moisture loss is coupled with heat transfer. The governing equations have been derived and simplified using well justified assumptions. An analytical scheme is presented for solving these equations for three cases, namely, h = h(c), h = h(c) + h(r), and h = h(c) + h(r) + h(e). The predicted temperature distributions and heat-transfer rates for four air velocities are compared with the measured data. Predictions for the first and second cases are in good agreement and those for the third and most realistic case are in even better agreement with experimental observations.

Poly(glycidyl azide) (PGA) an energetic polymer and polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) were condensed with 4,4' azobis(4-cyanopentanoyl chloride) (ACPC) to prepare macro-azo-initiators. Block copolymers containing each of these polyethers as a block segment combined with polystyrene (PS) or poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) have been drived by the polymerization of monomers initiated with this macro-azo-initiators. Thermal properties of block copolymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry. DSC traces showed single glass transition temperatures in between the related segments of copolymers. Dynamic thermogravimetric analysis revealed the individual degradation behaviors of block segments (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Force-deformation relations for finite chains between two parallel walls are studied. First, the force-deformation relation for a single finite chain between two walls is derived from a second-order tensorial Chebychev distribution function of the end-to-end vector. Second, the case of several chains between two parallel walls is studied. The chains bridging the gap between the two walls are assumed to exert forces only at their ends at the walls. The model is constructed by assuming a very long chain to bridge the gap between two parallel walls. At contact points, the chain is assumed to adsorb to the walls by an adsorption energy of Delta H-c per contact point. Thus the chain is divided into N-s strands, each extending from one wall to the other and N-s + 1 contact points. The contact points at the walls are assumed as ''hinges'' over which the chain passes. The most probable distribution of strand lengths is obtained, from which mechanical variables such as the force-extension relations, maximum extensibility, ductility, and toughness of the chain-wall system are calculated.

In Cs-134 uptake by the roots of orchard grass and beans planted in three different lands of soil has been studied. For this purpose, a Cs-134 radionuclide solution having 0.3086 muCi/pot radioactivity was added to Ando, Serpentine and Alluial and Clay soil which were fertilized by Standard, - K, + Ca, Water limited and Control for both orchard grass and bean groups. Thus, the above mentioned groups have been harvested and left to dry. The contamination levels these plants have been detected and measured by using an HPGe detector interactively working with MCA. Finally, it has been determined that the Cs-134 uptakes depend primarily on soil characteristics. Besides the decrease in the Cs-134 activity for the plants grown in soils to which the stable cesium or potassium was added 0.011-1.38 per cent activity for the root of plants grown in free K soils was observed. Moreover, highest Cs-134 activity has been determined for the plants grown in - K fertilized soil with respect to the other soil samples.

A method which permits one to reveal the one-dimensional (1-D) electromagnetic profile of a half-space bounded by a two-part impedance ground is established. The method reduces the problem to the solution of two functional equations. One of these equations is solved exactly by reducing it to a Riemann-Hilbert problem while the other is reduced under the Born approximation to a Fredholm equation of the first kind whose kernel involves the solution to the first equation. Since this latter constitutes an ill-posed problem, its regularized solution, in the sense of Tikhonov, is given. An illustrative application shows the applicability and the accuracy of the theory. The functional equations are valid also when the impedance of the ground varies in arbitrary manner. The theory can he applied to a quick determination of the constitutive electromagnetic parameters of the atmosphere over a nonhomogeneous impedance ground.

An approach to optimize the design of three-phase induction motors for a wide speed range drive is considered. Two operating points in the speed range are taken into consideration. The problem is handled as a constrained optimization problem. An accurate model for the motor in terms of its dimensions has been developed which predicts the motor performance based on about 60 parameters of motor geometry.

It is considered and offered the waveguide band elimination filter with the working mode Hi,, that can be used in millimeter waves devices such as up, down- converters, mixer, etc. The characteristics of the filter was calculated by using analogy in electromagnetic the waveguide propagation and optical the wave propagation in the medium with the specific refractive index (N) over cap. This conception can be applied for party-filled waveguide in the case when the Brillouin decomposition of the waveguide waves into plane waves is correct and the transformation of the incident (propagating) mode into other the mode types is absent.

We calculate the Bogolubov coefficients for a C((0)) metric which describes the snapping of a cosmic string. In this background, we show that there are no regular solutions with particle interpretation, but we find a generalized solution with integrable discontinuity, which exhibits particle creation. We also find a regular solution if we allow wave packets.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was copolymerized with vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) using Co-60-gamma-radiation at varying volume fractions of the liquid monomers in the feed. Thin copolymer films were prepared by casting tetrahydrofuran solutions of the copolymers on a mercury surface. The effect of the mole fraction of VTES in the copolymer on the glass transition temperatures, mechanical properties and water vapor permeabilities were investigated. Glass transition temperatures and mechanical properties decreased with increasing VTES content in the copolymer. However, the water vapor permeabilities were found to increase with the VTES content. The increased water vapor permeation was attributed to increased water solubility in the copolymers due to the presence of Si-O-bonds.

A kinetic-thermodynamic model is presented to predict the total porosities of macroporous copolymer networks formed by free-radical crosslinking copolymerization of styrene (S) and commercial divinylbenzene (DVB, a mixture of meta and para DVB isomers and ethylstyrene). The kinetic part of the model predicts, based upon the method of moments, the concentration of the reacting species, the gel, and sol properties as a function of the monomer conversion. The thermodynamic part of the model describes the phase equilibria between the gel and separated phases during the S-DVB copolymerization and predicts the volume of the separated phase, which is the pore volume of the crosslinked material, as a function of the monomer conversion. Calculation results show that the porosity of S-DVB networks increases as the polymer-diluent interaction parameter increases, or as the initial monomer concentration decreases. Porosity also increases on increasing the DVB content of the monomer mixture. Both the polymerization temperature and the initiator concentration affect significantly the kinetics of S-DVB copolymerization. However, the final porosity of S-DVB copolymers is largely insensitive to the amount of the initiator and to the polymerization temperature. All calculation results are in accord with the experimental data published previously. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A three-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory was proposed by Jackiw and Pi to create mass for the gauge fields. However, the quadratic action obtained by switching off the non-Abelian interactions possesses more gauge symmetries than the original one, causing some difficulties in quantization. Jackiw and Pi proposed another action by introducing new fields, whose gauge symmetries are consistent with the quadratic part. It is shown that all of these theories have the same number of physical degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian framework. Hence, as far as the physical states are considered, there is no inconsistency. Nevertheless, perturbation expansion is still problematic. To rectify this we propose to modify one of the constraints of the non-Abelian theory without altering its canonical Hamiltonian nor the number of physical states.

Macro-azo-initiators (MAIs) having poly( ethylene glycol)(PEG) units were obtained by various multistep synthetic approaches. In the first stage, macro-azo-initiators of PEG type with azo groups inserted in the main chain were prepared. MAIs were then characterized by chemical analyses, spectral methods, H-1-NMR, GPC, and DSC techniques. They were used in the free-radical bulk polymerization of dicyclohexylitaconate to synthesize AB block copolymers of poly( ethylene glycol-b-dicyclohexylitaconate) (PEG-b-PDCHI). For the binding of peptides to wild-type HIV-1 and BIV TAR RNA and to mutants with bulges of various sizes, changes in the Delta Delta Gvalues of binding were determined from experimental K-d values. The corresponding entropies of these bulges are estimated by enumerating all possible RNA bulge conformations on a lattice and then applying the Boltzmann relationship. Independent calculations of entropies from fluctuations are also carried out using the Gaussian network model(GNM) recently introduced for analyzing folded structures. Strong correlations are seen between the changes in free energy determined for binding and the two different unbound entropy calculations. The fact that the calculated entropy increase with larger bulge size is correlated with the enhanced experimental binding free energy is unusual. This system exhibits a dependence on the entropy of the unbound form that is opposite to usual binding models. Instead of a large initial entropy being unfavorable since it would be reduced upon binding, here the larger entropies actually favor binding. Several interpretations are possible: (i) the higher conformational freedom implies a higher competence for binding with a minimal strain, by suitable selection amongst the set of already accessible conformations; (ii) larger bulge entropies enhance the probability of the specific favorable conformation of the bound state; (iii) the increased freedom of the larger bulges contributes more to the bound state than to the unbound state; (iv) indirectly the large entropy of the bound state might have an unfavorable effect on the solvent structure. Nonetheless, this unusual effect is interesting.

The dynamic response of multiple-degree-of-freedom nonlinear structures is usually determined by numerical integration of the equations of motion, an approach which is computationally very expensive for steady-state response analysis of large structures. In this paper, an alternative semianalytical quasilinear method based on the describing function formulation is proposed for the harmonic response analysis of structures with symmetrical nonlinearities. The equations of motion are converted to a set of nonlinear algebraic equations and the solution is obtained iteratively. The linear and nonlinear parts of the structure are dealt with separately, the former being represented by the constant linear receptance matrix [alpha], and the latter by the generalized quasilinear matrix [DELTA] which is updated at each iteration. A special technique that reduces the computation time significantly when the nonlinearities are localized is used with success to analyze large structures. The proposed method is fully compatible with standard modal analysis procedures. Several examples dealing with cubic stiffness, piecewise linear stiffness, and coulomb friction type of nonlinearities are presented in the case of a ten-degree-of-freedom structure.

In this paper we describe the improved version of a novel rule induction algorithm, namely ILA. We first outline the basic algorithm, and then present how the algorithm is enhanced using the new evaluation metric that handles uncertainty in a given data set. In addition to having a faster induction than the original one, we believe that our contribution comes into picture with a new metric that allows users to define their preferences through a penalty factor. We use this penalty factor to tackle with over-fitting bias, which is inherently found in a great many of inductive algorithms. We compare the improved algorithm ILA-2 to a variety of induction algorithms, including ID3, OC1, C4.5, CN2, and ILA. According to our preliminary experimental work, the algorithm appears to be comparable to the well-known algorithms such as CN2 and C4.5 in terms of accuracy and size.

A third order Monge-Ampere type equation of associativity that Dubrovin has obtained in 2-d topological field theory is formulated in terms of a variational principle subject to second class constraints. Using Dirac's theory of constraints this degenerate Lagrangian system is cast into Hamiltonian form and the Hamiltonian operator is obtained from the Dirac bracket. There is a new type of KacMoody algebra that corresponds to this Hamiltonian operator. In particular, it is not a W-algebra. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Cooperative motions of cis-1,4-polybutadiene (cis-PB) and cis-1,4-polyisoprene (cis-PI) in the bulk state are analyzed and compared using the cooperative kinematics (CK) theory. The mechanisms of relaxation on a local scale are closely similar for the two polymers in dense media, resulting from the same geometry of the backbone, which is the major determinant of the types of accessible cooperative conformational rearrangements. The correlation times for the reorientation of C-H bonds of cis-PI are found to be about 1 order of magnitude longer than those for cis-PB at the same effective friction coefficient. The results are in accordance with previous NMR experiments which indicated a ratio of about 10. The molecular characteristics responsible for this difference in the local mobilities of the two polymers are examined. Three sources are identified: (i) the excess volume swept by the moving units in cis-PI due to the CH3 units appended to the backbone, (ii) the higher short-range conformational potential energies in cis-PI compared to those in cis-PB, and (iii) the restriction in the number of accessible isomeric transitions in cis-PI compared to those of cis-PB, which is due to the excluded-volume effect.

In view of the recently seen dramatic effect of quenched random bonds on tricritical systems, we have conducted a renormalization-group study on the effect of quenched random magnetic fields on the tricritical phase diagram of the spin-1 Ising model in d = 3. We find that random fields convert first-order phase transitions into second-order phase transitions more effectively than random bonds. The coexistence region is extremely flat, attesting to an unusually small tricritical exponent beta(u). The random-field phase diagram is strikingly asymmetric. To accommodate this asymmetry, the second-order boundary exhibits reentrance. [S0031-9007(99)08751-7].

In situ fluorescence and light scattering techniques were used to study the formation of heterogeneities during the free-radical crosslinking polymerization of sodium acrylate (NaAc) in the presence of N,N'-methylene(bisacrylamide) (BAAm) as a crosslinker. Pyranine was used as a fluorescence probe in the experiments. The reactions were carried out at room temperature and at a monomer concentration of 20.6 w/v% in water. It was found that the gel forming system became turbid at the start of the reaction; continuing polymerization and crosslinking reactions turned the opaque gels into slightly opaque and finally transparent gels. Two peaks were observed both in the scattered and emitted light intensities versus the reaction lime plots. The first peak corresponds to the formation and growth of the phase separated domains whereas the second peak reflects the macrogelation point in the reaction system.

The diffraction of plane electromagnetic waves by the configuration formed by a slit in a perfectly conducting plane and a parallel complementary strip is investigated. The related boundary-value problem is formulated into a modified matrix Wiener-Hopf equation. The factorization of the kernel matrix is accomplished through Abrahams' method and the modified matrix Wiener-Hopf equation is first reduced to a pair of coupled Fredholm integral equations of the second kind and then solved by iterations. Several numerical results illustrating the effects of various parameters such as the spacing between the slit and the strip and their width on the diffraction phenomena are presented.

Sol-gel phase transition during the free-radical crosslinking copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was studied using the steady-state fluorescence method. Copolymerization was performed both in the absence and presence of toluene at 75 degrees C. Sol-gel phase transitions were monitored by observing the direct intensity of an excited pyrene methyl pivalate during in situ fluorescence experiments. Random bond and site bond percolation models were employed to quantify the results of bulk and solution polymerizations, respectively, during the sol-gel phase transition. Gel points were determined and the beta exponents were found to be around 0.37 and 0.38 during gelation in bulk and solution polymerizations, respectively. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Alcoa A-16 SG commercial alumina powder is widely used for the preparation of porous supports for alumina membrane layers. In this work, a comparison is made concerning the use of different alumina powders. For this purpose two types of powders with different physical and chemical characteristics to Alcoa powder were chosen. The powders of interest were Seydisehir alumina, which is a local alumina produced for metallurgical purposes by the Bayer process, and the granulated form of this alumina obtained by spray-drying. Due to the coarser microstructure of the substrates prepared from spray-dried powders, the pore size was larger and the amount of the flux was higher than the other two substrates which were prepared from the processed Seydisehir and Alcoa powders in identical conditions.

The variational principle for the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in two dimensions is shown to contain three arbitrary functions of four variables. There exist two different specializations of this variational principle where the Lagrangian is degenerate and furthermore contains an arbitrary function of two variables. The Hamiltonian formulation of these degenerate Lagrangian systems requires the use of Dirac's theory of constraints. As in the case of most completely integrable systems the constraints are second class and Dirac brackets directly yield the Hamiltonian operators. Thus the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in two dimensions admits two classes of infinitely many Hamiltonian operators, namely a family of local, as well as another family non-local Hamiltonian operators and symplectic 2-forms which depend on arbitrary functions of two variables. The simplest non-local Hamiltonian operator corresponds to the Kac-Moody algebra of vector fields and functions on the unit circle. Hamiltonian operators that belong to either class are compatible with each other but between classes there is only one compatible pair. in the case of real Monge-Ampere equations with constant right-hand side this compatible pair is the only pair of Hamiltonian operators that survives. Then the complete integrability of all these real Monge-Ampere equations follows try Magri's theorem. Some of the remarkable properties we have obtained for the Hamiltonian structure of the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in two dimensions turn out to be generic to the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation and the geodesic flow for the complex homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in arbitrary number of dimensions. Hence among all integrable nonlinear evolution equations in one space and one time dimension, the real homogeneous Monge-Ampere equation is distinguished as one that retains its character as an integrable system in multiple dimensions.

Energetic poly(glycidyl azide) (PGA) elastomers with different crosslink densities were prepared by varying the NCO/OH reactive-groups ratio from 0.8 to 1.0. In the preparation of the elastomers, PGA chains were end-liked with a mixture of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) and trimethylol propane (TMP) at a fixed TMP/PGA mole ratio. The number average molar mass between junction points of the network chains <(M)over bar (c)> was calculated using data obtained from swelling and uniaxial tensile tests and the results ware compared. For the mechanical characterization of the networks, Mooney-Rivlin plots were prepared and the values of the constants 2C(1) and 2C(2) of PGA networks having different crosslink densities were determined.

Microsatellite instability in a subset of colorectal cancers from North America, Europe and Japan has been reported. We examined 88 colorectal cancers from Turkish patients. Five different microsatellite loci (I mono- and 4 dinucleotide repeat regions) were tested. Eight tumors displayed replication errors (RERs) with at least 2 different markers. Right-sided tumors showed significantly higher frequency of microsatellite instability compared with left-sided tumors. The frequency of RER phenotype was slightly higher in tumors occurring in younger (<50 years old) than in older patients (13% vs. 8%), and there was no association between sex and genomic instability. The frequency of genomic instability in our study group was 9%, whereas the reported frequencies in tumors from other countries varied between 12% and 16%. (C) 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

We studied 187 papers published in the journals on astronomy and astrophysics indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) for the decade period 1985-1994. These have been the papers that included at least one author listing an address from an institution in Turkey. We found that a great majority of the papers, whether theoretical or observational, went to only very small number (three) of a total set of 34 journals in the area. The distribution of papers by institutions revealed that about three fourths of the papers came from two universities: the Aegean University, and the Middle East Technical University (METU). We also found that the fraction of multiple authored papers has increased appreciably and the number of citations an ''average'' paper received has decreased gradually during the period considered.

The WDVV equations of associativity in two-dimensional topological field theory are completely integrable third-order Monge-Ampere equations which admit bi-Hamiltonian structure. The time variable plays a distinguished role in the discussion of Hamiltonian structure, whereas in the theory of WDVV equations none of the independent variables merits such a distinction. WDVV equations admit very different alternative Hamiltonian structures under different possible choices of the time variable, but all these various Hamiltonian formulations can be brought together in the framework of the covariant theory of symplectic structure. They can be identified as different components of the covariant Witten-Zuckerman symplectic 2-form current density where a variational formulation of the WDVV equation that leads to the Hamiltonian operator through the Dirac bracket is available.

Quantum Hall effect wavefunctions corresponding to the filling factors 1/2p + 1, 2/2p + 1,..., 2p/2p + 1, 1, are shown to form a basis of irreducible cyclic representations of the quantum algebra U-q(sl(2)) at q(2p+1) = 1. Thus, the wavefunctions Psi(P/Q) possessing filling factors P/Q < 1 where Q is odd and P, Q are relatively prime integers are classified in terms of U-q(sl(2)).

This study presents a new approach for analyzing unsteady heat transfer during forced air cooling of figs as spherical products. In the cooling of food products, conduction, convection, radiation, and internal heat generation take place. Moisture loss is coupled with heat transfer An analytical scheme is presented for solving these equations for three cases, namely h=h(c), h=h(c)+h(r) and h=h(c)+h(r)+h(e). The predicted temperature distributions and heat transfer rates for four air velocities are compared with measured data. The predictions for the first and second cases are in good agreement with experimental observations On the other hand, the predictions for the third and most realistic case ave in very good agreement with experimental observations in considering the moisture loss effect.

The robustness property of sliding-mode controllers (SMC's) makes them attractive for industrial control applications. However, this property is valid only under ideal sliding-mode conditions. Additionally, practical SMC's are likely to exhibit high-frequency oscillations in the plant output, called chattering, and to excite unmodeled dynamics. A novel, chattering-free sliding-mode control algorithm design, based on Lyapunov stability criteria, is considered in this paper. The control algorithm developed is experimentally implemented on a direct-drive manipulator for various payload configurations. It is seen that the controller carries a certain amount of robustness property, the trajectory-following performance being only slightly affected by the changes in the payload. A comparison of the experimental results with those obtained by a well-tuned proportional-derivative control is also given.

A new macromonomeric initiator (macroinimer) was synthesized and evaluated for the bulk polymerization of styrene at 60 and 80 degrees C. The macroinimer containing poly(dimethylsiloxane), PDMS, was synthesized via condensation reactions between 4,-4'-azobis-4-cyanopentanoyl chloride (ACPC), PDMS and methacryloyl chloride. The product (MIM I) was thermally homopolymerized and copolymerized with styrene in bulk. Kinetics of radical polymerization of styrene with MIM I at 60 degrees C and at low conversion was studied. Rate constant K, k(p)(fk(d)/k(1))(1/2), was estimated from kinetic data as 1.15 x 10(-4) 1(1/2) mol(-1/2) s. Bulk polymerization of styrene with macroinimers at 80 degrees C gave crosslinked block copolymers. D.s.c. measurements showed that crosslinked block copolymers had a glass transition temperature around 45 degrees C. This is evidence of a plasticizing effect of flexible polysiloxane segments in copolymers. Crosslinked PDMS-b-PS block copolymers obtained using macroinimers may be an interesting group of thermoplastic elastomers. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

An identification algorithm for use with data generated by periodic inputs is presented. The algorithm is based on the geometrical properties of the resulting periodic output signal and a state-space model is derived from the signal subspace of a Hankel matrix by means of a singular value decomposition. It is shown that 2n + 1 noise-free output measurements are required to identify an nth order system. The algorithm is demonstrated to be consistent when the output measurements are corrupted by zero mean noise characterized by decaying covariances. The computational complexity of the algorithm is several orders of magnitude lower than standard methods.

Nascent disordered polypeptide chains fold into unique three-dimensional protein structures spontaneously. The information inherent in amino acid sequences, which determines the resultant protein conformation, is called the "folding code". Numerous examples demonstrate that the folding code is degenerate and allows a variety of artificial changes in amino acid residues and their interactions. In this aspect, the meaning and the mechanisms of realization of folding code are discussed.

This research was performed using experimental temperature data and a simple analytical model to estimate the temperature distributions at the centres of cylindrically canned products (diameter/thickness ratio = 4/1) during heat sterilization and cooling under continuous flow conditions for two retort temperatures (115 and 121 degrees C). The recorded experimental temperature data for an individual can for two different retort temperatures were then used to construct the dimensionless experimental centre temperature curves. In order to predict dimensionless centre temperature profiles with a mathematical model, the convection boundary condition (i.e. 0.1 < Bi < 100) in transient heat transfer was considered. The predicted temperature profiles were compared with the experimental centre temperature measurements for two cases-heat sterilization and cooling. The experimental temperature values were in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The results of this study show that the present technique is a seasonable tool for estimating in a simple and accurate form the temperature distributions of a cylindrically canned product subject to both heat sterilization and cooling.

An explicit analytical formula for a short kernel fifth-order polynomial interpolator is obtained. It is also possible to obtain the explicit forms of even higher order interpolation kernels with the method of calculation used, hut it is seen that these local kernels become ''remainder-dominated'' as the order increases. The frequency domain properties and the accuracies of the obtained kernel and the known convolution kernels are compared, Frequency domain comparison with the cubic B-spline interpolators is also given. Some cases of proper use of the calculated kernels hare been pointed out.

It is shown that the Poisson structure of dynamical systems with three degrees of freedom can be defined in terms of an integrable one-form in three dimensions. Advantage is taken of this fact and the theory of foliations is used in discussing the geometrical structure underlying complete and partial integrability. Techniques for finding Poisson structures are presented and applied to various examples such as the Halphen system which has been studied as the two-monopole problem by Atiyah and Hitchin. It is shown that the Halphen system can be formulated in terms of a flat SL(2,R)-valued connection and belongs to a non-trivial Godbillon-Vey class. On the other hand, for the Euler top and a special case of three-species Lotka-Volterra equations which are contained in the Halphen system as limiting cases, this structure degenerates into the form of globally integrable bi-Hamiltonian structures. The globally integrable bi-Hamiltonian case is a linear and the SL(2,R) structure is a quadratic unfolding of an integrable one-form in 3+1 dimensions. It is shown that the existence of a vector field compatible with the flow is a powerful tool in the investigation of Poisson structure and some new techniques for incorporating arbitrary constants into the Poisson one-form are presented herein. This leads to some extensions, analogous to q extensions, of Poisson structure. The Kermack-McKendrick model and some of its generalizations describing the spread of epidemics, as well as the integrable cases of the Lorenz, Lotka-Volterra, May-Leonard, and Maxwell-Bloch systems admit globally integrable bi-Hamiltonian structure.

In the framework of a perturbative approach we evaluate the vacuum polarization of a massless electromagnetic field in the spacetime of multiple cosmic strings. We show that in addition to the energy density arising from vacuum fluctuations around each of the strings individually, there also exists an additional effect of vacuum polarization, which results in the Casimir force between two parallel cosmic strings.

Two samples of asphaltites and oil shales were pyrolised under controlled conditions at a heating rate of 5-degrees-C/min, and maintained at 540-degrees-C by using a Heinze retort. The oils produced from retorting of asphaltites and oil shales are more complex than crude petroleum, and these products consist of complex mixtures of aliphatic, polycyclic aromatic and polar aromatic compounds containing N, O and S heteroatoms. Pyrolysis products of asphaltites and oil shales were separated into various fractions by solvent extraction and column chromatography on silica gel. Average structural parameters for the neutral aromatic pentane-soluble fractions of asphaltites and oil shales-pyrolysis products are reported based on H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy combined with elemental and molecular weight analyses. Pyrolysis products of asphaltites are consistent with aromatic systems substituted with naphthenic groups and alkyl chains. Aromatic ring condensation reactions are not important during pyrolysis of oil shales, and alkene content depends strongly on the heating rate during pyrolysis while average normal chain lengths do not. The analytical results, especially C-13 NMR spectroscopy, can only be considered approximate, since they present an over-simplified picture of very complex mixtures containing a wide range of components.

The particle size distribution has been determined for three different montmorillonite samples, The data were interpreted taking into account the fractal properties of the colloidal particles. Within the range of particle sizes where the size distribution displays scaling behavior, the power law is found to be consistent with a reaction-limited cluster aggregation process. Non-ionic polyacrylamide gels immersed in aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) exhibit a continuous volume change upon continuous increase of the PEG concentration in the external solution. The volume change becomes discontinuous when ionizable groups are incorporated into the network. As the proportion of ionizable groups increases, or, as the molecular weight of PEG decreases, the critical concentration of PEG required for a discontinuous volume collapse rises. The distribution of PEG inside and outside the gel phase changes with gel volume; it also exhibits a discontinuous change at the phase transition. Flory-Huggins theory gives a qualitative description of the phenomenon. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.

Experimental results of the influence of high-power density (up to I-0=400 MW/cm(2)), ultrashort laser pulses with duration of 42 fs (FWHM, E = 1.98 eV) on the transient transmission change of layered GaS crystals at room temperature are reported. The strong absorption at Delta t=0 (zero time delay between pump and probe pulse) is identified as being due to two-photon direct interband transitions. The estimated value of the two-photon absorption coefficient is beta(dir) = (0.6 +/- 0.2) x 10(-3) cm/MW. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Experimental evidence suggests a functional significance of electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha rhythms. Event-related, evoked, and induced alpha rhythms may ha ve functional correlates in primary sensory processing and preparatory processes. These results are in accord with the view that spontaneous and induced EEG alpha rhythms have quasi-deterministic properties.

The swelling of polybutadiene (PB) networks of different cross-link densities filled with finely divided sodium chloride (NaCl) particles are studied in water, water/acetone and water/THF mixtures. Swelling over periods of 2 months are recorded. The degree of swelling was observed to increase continuously in water during this period, whereas in water/acetone mixtures it reached a peak followed by deswelling and it converged to a maximal value in water/THF mixtures. The highly cross-linked samples exhibited unusually high degrees of swelling, and calculations indicated full stretching of the network chains. The enthalpic contribution to the chemical potential of the networks in equilibrium with solvent was determined using the phantom network model of rubber elasticity theory. The swollen network-salt system was approximated by the lattice model of polymer solutions. The positive contributions of water and acetone to the chemical activity of the swollen network were offset by the negative contribution of dissociation of salt in water, resulting in a small negative enthalpy of mixing. The highest rate of diffusion of solvent was observed for the PB/water/THF ternary system. Diffusion rates of pure water and water/acetone mixture were much smaller and of comparable magnitude. Mechanical measurements of stress and strain at break, and dynamic mechanical measurements of storage and loss moduli of filled and unfilled samples showed that filling with NaCl did not change the mechanical properties of the networks significantly, in spite of the dramatic change in the swelling behaviour. In cement plants in Turkey CO, NO2, SO2 and particulate emissions were measured using standard measurement techniques and equipment. Emission factors are calculated by dividing the emission rates by capacity of production at the time of measurements for each plant, The results of this study show that the dominant emissions from cement production in Turkey is CO followed by NO2, dust and SO2 in decreasing order. National averages for the emission factors are calculated and compared to international emission factors. On average the Turkish dust emission factor is higher than the German factor, however NO2 and SO2 emission factors are lower in Turkey.

The hydrolysis of cephalosporin G to 7-amino-3-deacetoxy cephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) by free and immobilized penicillin G acylase (PGA) was studied in a mutant of Escherichia coli ATCC 11105. V(m) and K(m) values of soluble enzyme (specific activity: 25.0 U mg-1, protein concentration: 0.4 mg ml-1) were 15.92 U ml-1 min-1 and 2.94 mM cephalosporin G (Cep G) respectively at pH 8.0 and 40-degrees-C. Optimal pH and temperature values of Cep G hydrolysis by the soluble enzyme were 8.0 and 55-degrees-C. The K(m) value of immobilized enzyme obtained by covalent attachment on oxirane acrylic beads (specific activity: 120 U g-1 dry matrix at pH 8.0 and 40-degrees-C, bound protein: 12.8 mg) was 3.32 +/- 0.06 mm Cep G. The immobilized enzyme showed highest activity at pH 8.0 and at 50-degrees-C. A 95% conversion rate to 7-ADCA was observed in 40 min at 40-degrees-C and pH 8.0 with 1.0% (w/v) Cep G. Excess Cep G, PAA and 7-ADCA were uncompetitive, competitive and non-competitive inhibitors respectively for both soluble and immobilized PGA. The activation energy of Cep G hydrolysis was calculated to be 7.83 kcal mol-1 for soluble PGA and 5.25 kcal mol-1 for immobilized PGA.

The definition of the Eisenstein series E (Z, s, k, Gamma) on the symplectic and unitary groups G is well-known. We introduce a series E (Z, lambda) whose construction involves a 5-tuple {G, P, M, W, epsilon} satisfying certain conditions. We prove that, if lambda: M(nx2n) n (E) --> C is a locally-constant function, then the series E (Z, lambda) is a finite linear combination of G-transforms of the Eisenstein series E (Z, s k, Gamma) whose coefficients are products of certain Hecke L-functions.

A kinetic model was used to predict the molecular weight developments and the critical properties in free-radical crosslinking copolymerization. The predictions of the model were compared to the experimental data reported previously. Agreement of the kinetic model with experiments is satisfactory for both low and high crosslinker contents. The model parameters indicate increasing extent of shielding of pendant vinyl groups as the reaction proceeds due to the increasing number of multiple crosslinkages. The calculation results indicate that the real critical exponents can only be observed in the region epsilon < 10(-2)-10(-3) where experimental studies are very difficult. Outside of this region, the apparent critical exponent gamma describing the divergence of the weight-average molecular weight was found to deviate from the classical value due to the conversion dependent kinetics of free-radical crosslinking copolymerization.

Crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) gels with different crosslink densities in the form of rods and beads were prepared by free-radical crosslinking copolymerization. Solution and inverse suspension polymerization techniques were used for the gel synthesis. The gels were utilized to concentrate dilute aqueous solutions of penicillin G acylase (PGA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA). The discontinuous volume transition at 34 degrees C observed in the gel swelling was used as the basis of concentrating dilute aqueous protein solutions. PNIPA gels formed below 18 degrees C were homogeneous, whereas those formed at higher temperatures exhibited heterogeneous structures. The water absorption capacity of PNIPA gels in the form of beads was much higher, and their rate of swelling was much faster than the rod-shaped PNIPA gels. It was also found that the polymerization techniques used significantly affect the properties of PNIPA gels. The separation efficiency decreased when the protein molecules PGA or BSA in the external solution were replaced with small-molecular-weight compounds, such as 6-APA. The protein separation efficiency by the gel beads increased to 100% after coating the bead surfaces with BSA. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

THE effects of the subthreshold visual stimuli on the electrical activity of the brain were investigated by an oddball-like paradigm and a single-stimulus paradigm. In the oddball-like paradigm, suprathreshold and subthreshold stimuli were presented randomly where the suprathreshold stimulus probability was 0.24. The single-stimulus paradigm contained only the suprathreshold stimuli and was identical to the oddball-like paradigm apart from the absence of subthreshold stimuli. Suprathreshold P3b amplitude was larger for the oddball-like than for the single-stimulus condition particularly in the centro-parietal region. This result suggests that at least one component of the P300 wave could be assigned to an automatic comparison and memory updating process which runs unconsciously.

Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) crosslinked graft copolymers are described. Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s containing double bonds in the side chain (PHA-DB) were obtained by co-feeding Pseudomonas oleovorans with a mixture of nonanoic acid and anchovy (hamci) oily acid (in weight ratios of 50/50 and 70/30). PHA-DB was thermally grafted with a polyazoester synthesized by the reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) with MW of 400 (PEG-400) and 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanopentanoyl chloride). Sol-gel analysis and spectrometric and thermal characterization of the networks are reported.
